"I've lost my voice now, but does it matter?" -Rubyhorse, 'Bitter'
So, I see you've stumbled upon my blog.
Obviously this is the first post, but certainly not the first 'focused
subject' for this blog. But, then again, the subject of this is obviously
my first post. I see that I'm rambling. That tends to happen when you
make a living looking at words all day. I majored in English, with a
focus in Creative Writing, and I work as an editor for an engineering firm, so
obviously I must love words. There's that word again- obviously.
Way to state the obvious.
One downside of what I do for a living is that I
don’t get much of an opportunity to generate new material. I’m also sure that many of you can relate to
the phenomenon of chopping away through the workday, when you are suddenly
struck with a case of wandering mind.
You’ll think of something that either intrigues or bothers you to the
point of total distraction, and then you think to yourself “I need to write
about this.”
There are a lot of things that bother me. As I approach the end of my 20’s, I’ve been
retrospective about a lot of the views and values from which I was raised, and
it’s posed many questions that I feel I would never be able to have answered in
an objective manner. That, and in my
formative years, I’ve often been told that my voice didn’t count because I
couldn’t possibly understand what I was saying or what the matter was to begin
with.
But, then again, isn’t that the beauty of the
Internet? People who feel voiceless can
speak out in an anonymous (or non-anonymous) fashion and be heard. I, for one, am all for bloggers who tackle a
variety of subjects. You can easily
search for your subject du jour, and you can find varied opinions and
objectives with one simple click. That,
and I just love words. I love the power
that words can have, and how writing can give you insight into people’s
minds. I love how you can have all of this stuff knocking around in your head, and when you've no means to express yourself verbally, all you have to do is craft words together and get it out. It’s fascinating stuff.
My 7th grade Language Arts teacher once
said “First, write what you are thinking, then think about your writing.” With that being said, when I get to writing
on here, I hope that my words will hold some fascination for you. Happy Reading!
